Guess I shouldn't bother trying to do anything that doesn't involve a city because it'll just get nuked in some AI random battle that I have 0% chance of resisting.

The trick is to not work on your own - in an alliance protection can make a huge difference to being able to stand up to random AI.

There are a few other tricks (e.g. not all planets have the same level of AI activity - it's based on production or population I forget which) so it's possible but not for the faint of heart.

I'm a low level corp on earth struggling to get off the ground. I have yet to establish any social networks.

So what are you waiting for? This is a game of alliances and blood - if you look carefully the majority of the stronger corporations and driving fast to the establishment of strong networks because we know we cannot stand alone. What makes you think a low level corp would not be welcome? I'm quite sure you'll not stay low level forever.

Having said that yes - cities are indeed far safer than trying to work outside of them until you build up your social networks and military. I guess one ground rule here would be - don't build anything outside of a city that you cannot afford to lose until you can afford to defend it...

There is a problem with big monster events showing up and hitting new players inadvertently. Especially outside of cities. Not sure how to mitigate the problem. Its not easy to steer them away from new players.

Maybe the key here is not so much to steer them away from the big bad monster events but rather to minimize the loss.

Right now if a monster comes and chews up your facility or freighter (*cough* *cough* I'm getting short on freighters) you just take the loss and roll with it, you get the same cash back as if you'd have liquidated your assets so you don't entirely lose everything.

One option would be for small companies to be sponsored by the Terran Government so that they recovered a higher percentage of that loss - say 75% or so - it would still be a painful setback but not quite that painful, however you again need to decide exactly when and for how long this would kickin (some level of net worth minus HQ seems reasonable)

Personally I think the npcs are just about right atm (Though they shouldn't be this tough right at the start of the game.) they should be major events and forces of nature that require everyone to drop their petty rivalries for a time to come together and defeat like we did for the alien mothership and latest raider spawn. If they weren't so destructive, they wouldn't require teamwork to defeat.

The game is advertised as PvP, not everyone working together to defeat NPCs.
Monsters represent bad-luck events which destroy players through no fault of their own, which will drive them from the game.
Raiding unescorted transports is fine, destroying everything at a location is crazy.

"Barons of the Galaxy is a loosely cooperative strategy game of commerce, industry, politics and warfare played online with thousands of players at the same time in a self-expanding galaxy. It is played through your regular internet browser, iPad or Mobile Phone with nothing to install. Barons of the Galaxy is free to play with few limitations and no pay to win microtransactions."

That's the first line on the front page of the website. The game is more co-op vs enemy npcs than it is pvp, pvp exists sure, but pvp isn't a profitable activity under most conditions. Artifact resources are in fact the only thing I see leading to any pvp during the first month or so.
