I'd like to see "research" become actual research where you had to research levels of a technology with prerequisites before you could build it. E.G. Building research labs, feeding them resources/components until your researchers can build a prototype to test, etc.

Maybe you could license researches to others so they can build things, so researching could become a viable career choice.
Edit: Ships and vehicles too! While I am at it I would also like to see ships and vehicle require components and be sellable.

It would be great for the economy if players could make things that are actually useful to players in ways other than just profit or feeding cities.

The artifacts were going to be more along those lines. Theres not much else you can do in the game besides combat and production. Quests can only be so involved in a game like this but artifacts give the chance to make some "unique" effects that can be applied to ships or structures. We can also do some cooperative stuff for example, you randomly create a piece of a greater device. One of the 12 pieces of the armeggedon clock! =) What happens when you trade for and put all 12 pieces together?

If I found out somebody had the other pieces I would attack them and try to recover it.

id be tempted to limit corporations initially to the ability to gather one resource, or maybe 2 or 3. at the moment its too easy to gather everything. maybe as the hq gains levels they can unlock other resources

You can gather anything but it shouldn't be as profitable for you to make everything. The Corp HQ gives a bonus, makes it cheaper, to run structures in the same location. Perhaps it needs to be more significant. You also get a big boost from your tech, also maybe we need to make it more significant.

the problem with specialising is if the price drops you're in trouble, I can see everyone gathering mulitple resoruce types just to avoid this.

The problem with specialisation is that it is TOO specialised. I suggest that we should have another tier as an option, so for example you can pick to specialise in Basic Metal, or choose to specialise in metal production in general. The later would of course be less of a boost then the more specialised option, but would allow for a slightly more versatile corporation.

Masdus i was thinking something similar, As a new player, i doubt i would know exactly what i want to specialize into, as a result, i would be at a disadvantage against other players if I end up wanting to change my production. Perhaps we could even delay the first specialization until the first corp upgrade (and perhaps reduce the cost and turns for the first upgrade to compensate), that way a new player wont feel they are locked into competing for for a certain resource that may have already been locked down by more advanced players

Youcan change your tech easily just takes some time, fromteh Corp >> Research screen. youcan Unlearn tech and then apply it somewhere else. You can also go into a category instead of a specific product. The numbers were changes so that category boosting is pretty close to specific item. Also when others are playing you might find the price of your "specialization" not be profitable anymore and need to switch from Poultry to Beef, or Basic Mineral to Precious Minerals in some place.

But the real reason you may want to be diversified is that, hopefully, the event system will bring on dramatic changes in demand that will benefit a more diversified or category based guy than a specialized one.

AND ALSO, we might make a lot more tech options in the future for leadership, Politics, Military categories so your points spend almost like An RPG characters points. Right now there is nothing to DO except products

I didn't know we could unlearn tech, very valuable information thank you Doctor Dread. Looking forward to that event system then, sounds exciting and a nice way to liven things up.
